Friction to Focused: Leveraging Science for Peak Cognitive Performance
If you’re someone who performs at a high level, working at the edge of capacity while trying to keep burnout at bay, you’re in the right place. Maybe you’re an executive, a researcher, or an expert in your field aiming for leadership. Either way, you’ve set ambitious goals and achieved them.
But maybe you’ve also felt the cost: the anxiety of preparing for every worst-case scenario, the creeping exhaustion of being in overdrive, or the moment you realize you don’t even care about what you were working so hard for.
I get it. And that’s why I’m here.
Who I Am
I’m Dr. Jessica Weatherford – a clinical psychologist, executive coach, and former business strategist. I work with high performers: founders, surgeons, finance execs, researchers and others who want to keep achieving ambitious goals while learning how to leverage scientific insights for cognitive endurance, optimized workflows and stronger strategic outcomes.
My work is about helping individuals and teams pivot from friction to focused – reducing invisible barriers and building systems that support sustainable excellence.
What This Blog Is About
In Friction to Focused, I’ll share evidence-based insights, practical tools, and real-world stories about how to stay at the top of your game without trading short-term wins for long-term costs.
Think of it this way: even the most powerful engine needs a gearbox – something that adjusts your output to match the terrain. That’s what this blog is for. I combine neurobiology, psychology, and strategic best practices to help high performers and their teams maintain speed, precision, and endurance – without overheating the engine.
Why Friction to Focused?
For 15 years, I’ve been obsessed with optimizing systems. As an executive and consultant, I spent hundreds of hours with whiteboards optimizing workflows and strategic plans. As a clinical psychologist, I’ve worked with hundreds of clients to help them align their goals, actions and thoughts for optimized living. As a physiology nerd, I have read countless studies on how to optimize neurobiology and cardiology for sustained performance.
If you also enjoy leveraging science to be even better at whatever it is you do best, this is the place for you.
Also: I appreciate dad jokes, occasional swearing, and actual data. If that’s your vibe too, you’ll feel right at home.

Some posts will be highly practical. Others will be more reflective. All will bring evidence, utility, and some fun – because if there’s no joy in this, what are we even doing?
A Little About Me
I started my career in corporate leadership, earned my MBA, and worked at the intersection of strategy and psychology. Eventually, I hit pause, nerded out in grad school, and became a clinical psychologist focused on high-performing professionals.
My private practice, Catalyst Psychology, specializes in exceptional cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for anxiety, stress, ADHD, insomnia, and OCD. Weatherford Consulting helps executives and experts lead through volatility and perform under pressure.
Everything I write is grounded in the latest literature on the brain, cognition, behavior and strategic management. You will notice a bit of Stoic wisdom because sustainable excellence is not a given, it is built with intention, one habit at a time.
